About Klaipėda
Klaipėda is Lithuania's third city and its only major seaport — an ice-free Baltic port that handles the country's maritime trade. It's the smallest of the three cities covered here and the most distinctive, with a German-influenced old town reflecting its history as Memel.
It's also the gateway to the Curonian Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage sand peninsula, and to Lithuania's coastline. If living by the sea matters to you, this is the only option in the country.

Be honest with yourself about this one
Klaipėda is a specialism, not a general alternative to Vilnius or Kaunas. If you work in maritime, logistics or marine science — or you work remotely and genuinely want to live by the sea — it's excellent and cheap. If you're looking for a broad English-language job market or a large international community, it isn't the right choice, and it's better to know that now.

Coastal buildings have their own problem: damp. Alongside the usual heating question, ask about damp and ventilation. Sea air and older housing stock are a combination worth inspecting for before you sign anything.

English-language office work is limited. Some international logistics companies operate in English, and maritime is by nature an international industry — but there's no equivalent of Vilnius's fintech cluster. If you don't work in these sectors and don't speak Lithuanian, be realistic about the local market.

Getting Around
- Buses cover the city; it's small enough that journeys are short
- Compact and walkable — the old town and centre are easily covered on foot
- Ferries to the Curonian Spit run regularly and are part of daily life here
- Ferry connections to Germany and Sweden from the seaport — genuinely useful
- Palanga Airport is nearby for a limited set of routes; Vilnius or Riga for wider options
- Vilnius is around 4 hours by bus — this is the real isolation factor
Expat Life
The international community is small. Smaller than Kaunas, much smaller than Vilnius. There are foreigners here — in maritime industries, at the university, and remote workers — but you won't find the meetup scene or the density of English-speaking services that Vilnius offers.
Lithuanian matters more here than in Vilnius. English gets you further in maritime and academic settings than in daily life. Russian is spoken, particularly by older residents.
Healthcare. Klaipėda has hospitals and clinics, but for specialist care people sometimes travel to Kaunas or Vilnius. Register with a primary care clinic early and set up esveikata.lt.
The seasonal shift is pronounced. Summer brings domestic tourists and the coast comes alive. Winter is quiet, grey and windy. Some people love that rhythm; others find the off-season long.
Open a bank account before you arrive
Traditional banks need a residence permit and asmens kodas you won't have yet. Milder winters than inland — the Baltic moderates the extremes, so Klaipėda avoids the worst of the deep cold that hits Vilnius and Kaunas. The trade-off is wind, grey skies and rain. Summers are cooler than inland too, which is pleasant if you dislike heat.
The Curonian Spit is genuinely remarkable — a narrow sand peninsula of dunes, pine forest and small villages, shared with Russia's Kaliningrad region. Nida is the best-known settlement on the Lithuanian side. For anyone who values access to nature, this is the strongest argument for living here.
