The Universities
Founded in the 16th century, VU is Lithuania's flagship institution and the one with the strongest international name recognition. It's a full-spectrum university โ medicine, law, economics, IT, natural sciences, humanities โ with a historic campus in the centre of Vilnius old town. If you want the most recognisable Lithuanian degree and the widest subject choice, this is the default starting point.

Applied-sciences programmes are often shorter and cheaper. Both award EU-recognised qualifications. If postgraduate study or a regulated profession such as medicine is your goal, choose a university โ it is the better fit for an academic or medical career. Admission and Qualification Recognition
Three things determine whether you can apply at all โ and, if you're outside the EU, where you send the application.
Where to apply
Non-EU applicants generally apply direct to each university, not through LAMA BPO, the national admission system that handles most domestic applicants. That means separate applications, separate portals and separate deadlines for every university on your shortlist. Budget time for that rather than assuming one submission covers you.
Recognition of your existing qualification
Your previous degree, or the qualification that gives you access to higher education, generally needs formal recognition before a Lithuanian institution can admit you. This is handled by SKVC, the Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education. Two useful facts: it is free of charge, and it is decided within one calendar month. So recognition itself is rarely what makes people late โ legalisation and translation of the documents SKVC needs is, because that happens in your home country and on nobody's schedule.
English proficiency
There is no national minimum. Each university sets its own threshold, and they differ enough to matter when you're shortlisting: Vilnius University asks for IELTS 6.5, or B2; KTU asks IELTS 5.5 for bachelor's programmes; VILNIUS TECH asks IELTS 5.5; LSMU asks above 5.5.

Two cautions. Vilnius University publishes no consolidated tuition table and attaches no academic year to its per-programme fees, so a number on a VU programme page cannot be dated โ ask admissions to confirm it in writing for your intake. And KTU's master's fees page still shows 2025/26 while its bachelor's page has moved to 2026/27; don't read a master's figure as current. Legalisation is the hidden deadline
Diplomas and transcripts usually need an apostille or consular legalisation plus certified translation before SKVC will assess them. Requesting these from your home country can take weeks. Begin here, before you even shortlist programmes.

Start with the subject, not the ranking
Lithuania's institutions are specialised. The best choice for medicine and the best for engineering are different places in different cities.
Confirm the programme is taught in English
Not every programme at every university is. Verify for your specific course and intake year.
