Two things have changed recently and both catch people out: every prepaid SIM must now be registered to an identity document, and Vilnius Airport has no shop that sells one.
Prepaid SIMs start at €1.99, on networks that cover the whole country. Three of them serve Lithuania — Telia, Bitė and Tele2 — and each sells cheap prepaid under its own brands. A starter pack costs €1.99 and buys you 2 GB with calls and texts; €2.00 buys five days of unlimited data. You register the SIM to your passport online, which takes a few minutes. Staying under a week means a travel eSIM does the job without either step.

Ežys and EXTRA are Telia. Labas is Bitė. Pildyk is Tele2. The brand decides which network you actually sit on, so if coverage matters where you live, buy the prepaid brand belonging to the network that covers it.
A few details worth carrying out of the cards above. Telia's EXTRA plans can be ordered and cancelled by SMS, which no other brand publishes short codes for. Bitė's five-day unlimited-data pack at €2.00 undercuts every travel eSIM on this page, and its unlimited contract carries 50 GB of roaming for use in the EU and the UK. Tele2's €27.90 unlimited plan is the cheapest of the three, and it is the only operator confirmed to sell a prepaid eSIM.

Two more things sit on the postpaid side of the ledger: EU roaming is better, up to 59 GB, and handset deals are spread across the term.
Start prepaid. Nobody arriving needs a two-year contract in week one, and the prepaid brands run on the same three networks the contracts do. Move later if your data use justifies it, and you keep your number when you switch.
How to Choose the Right SIM Card
Three questions settle it: how long you are staying, how much data you use, and whether you will spend time outside the cities.
For most people a prepaid pack from any of the three networks is the answer. The differences only matter at the edges — heavy data use, rural coverage, or a stay too short to bother registering a SIM.
Here for a week or less. Skip the local SIM. Registration needs a document upload and the airport sells nothing, so a travel eSIM installed before you fly saves the errand.
Staying a month or more. Buy a prepaid pack. Two to four euros covers most people's month, and you can top up indefinitely without signing anything.
Moving here. Start prepaid anyway, then move to a contract once you have a local address and a payment method. Contracts give more data and far better EU roaming — Telia's unlimited plan carries 59 GB for use elsewhere in the EU.
Spending time outside the big cities. Choose on coverage, not price. The regulator's figures below make that decision for you.

A local number matters more than people expect. Bank verification codes, delivery drivers, clinic appointments and ride-hailing all assume a Lithuanian mobile. Staying beyond a few weeks? Get one.
Network Coverage Considerations
Lithuania is well covered by European standards. The regulator, RRT, reported in December 2025 that 4G reaches 97.9% of the country's territory and 5G 94.7%, with 5G available to 99.7% of households nationally.
Where the operators differ is 5G reach at people's homes, and the gap is wide.

Widest is not the same as fastest. Telia has the broadest 5G footprint by a distance, and RRT's own speed measurements put it first too. Ookla, meanwhile, has awarded Tele2 the fastest mobile network in Lithuania. The two findings do not conflict — one measures where you get a signal, the other how quick it is where it exists. In a city, speed is the more useful number. In smaller towns, reach wins.
Registering Your SIM
This is the step that surprises people, and there is no way around it.
Since 1 January 2025, anyone buying prepaid mobile service in Lithuania must supply the data needed to establish their identity. An unregistered SIM does not work: you buy the pack, and it stays dead until you finish registering. Cards bought before January 2025 were not affected.
You do not need an asmens kodas. The operators run two paths. Hold a Lithuanian personal code and you can register with Smart-ID, Mobile-ID or internet banking. Without one there is a biometric route — photograph your face and your identity document, then upload both to the registration form. You can also register in person at a store by showing an identity document.
Register before you need the number. If a Lithuanian number is what stands between you and a bank verification code, register first and confirm the SIM is live. Landing on a Friday evening with a dead SIM and a Monday bank appointment is a common and avoidable mistake.
Where to Buy a SIM Card
The instinct is to sort this out on arrival, before you have even left the terminal. In Lithuania that plan fails at the first step.
You will find a SIM in any city centre within about fifteen minutes of looking. You will not find one at the airport, whatever the guidebooks say.

Vilnius Airport does not sell SIM cards
