Dentistry in Lithuania sits half inside the compulsory health insurance system and half outside it. The state does not pay a share of your dental bill; it pays the dentist's working time in full, at a contracted clinic, and leaves you the cost of everything that goes into your mouth — anaesthetic, filling material, disposable instruments. A filling can be free for the labour and still produce an invoice.
The other half is that Lithuanian private dentistry is good and, by Western European standards, inexpensive. Both are below, along with the two places where the state pays for materials too: children, and dentures.

What PSD Actually Pays For
Privalomasis sveikatos draudimas — the compulsory health insurance the 6.98% taken from your salary funds — covers primary dental care (pirminė odontologinė pagalba), the work a general dentist does. Valstybinė ligonių kasa lists it: treating decay, pulpitis and some forms of periodontitis; removing tartar; extracting a tooth or a root; screening the mouth for signs of oral cancer; assessing a child's bite; a temporary filling. Above that sit specialists the fund also settles for — oral surgeons, periodontists, orthodontists and paediatric dentists — reached through your dentist rather than booked directly.
Two conditions attach, and both catch new arrivals. First the contract: the clinic must hold one with the territorial health insurance fund. A clinic without one is private for these purposes, whatever its sign says, and nothing it does can be claimed back. Second, registration — the route to compensated dental care runs through the poliklinika where you registered a family doctor, as the healthcare guide describes. That clinic either has a dentist or names the contracted practice it sends patients to.
The Bill You Still Get
The fund settles the dentist's work; the patient pays for medicines, filling and other dental materials, and single-use items, by the quantity actually used and at what the clinic paid for them. No percentage and no cap: a large restoration uses more material and costs more, at a state clinic as much as a private one.
Two groups pay nothing for standard treatment. Children and students get materials as well as labour free — every child at a contracted clinic, pupils in full-time general education and full-time vocational students, until the 24th birthday. Socially supported patients do too, on a certificate from their municipality's social support department; it is issued for the person rather than the treatment and must be brought to the appointment.
The exemption covers standard treatment. Choosing a dearer material, or work that is not clinically necessary, puts the difference back on the patient in every category, a child included. Whitening and cosmetic work sit outside the system altogether.
Ask what the materials cost before the drill starts
The material charge is the only variable part of a compensated appointment, set by what the dentist decides to use rather than by a rule you can look up. A clinic will price it beforehand if asked; almost nobody asks, and the number appears at the desk.
Children, Sealants and Braces
Children are where the system is genuinely generous, and where a foreign parent most often leaves money on the table.
Sealing the molars is free. From the eruption of the first permanent molar until the child turns 14 — in practice from around 6 — the fund pays for sealing the chewing surfaces of permanent molars, and around 40,000 children a year have it done. It is preventive: offered because the tooth is newly through, not because anything is wrong.
Professional hygiene is compensated annually for children between 13 and 18, alongside the preventive assessment and fluoride younger children receive.
Orthodontics is compensated by amount rather than proportion. The fund pays €85.98 per orthodontic plate and €687.71 for a set of fixed braces, in full, where the clinical criteria are met — a cleft, a congenital defect of the skull or facial bones, missing or impacted teeth, or severe crowding, established on an x-ray and an examination. One treatment period allows up to 3 plates per jaw and 2 sets of braces. Treatment must begin before the 18th birthday and then runs on the fund's money for no longer than 5 years.
Emergency Dental Care
Emergency dental care — būtinoji odontologinė pagalba — is free to permanent residents regardless of insurance status and without a referral: an uninsured new arrival with an abscess at two in the morning is treated and not billed. What counts is acute, unmanageable pain, swelling and infection. It is not a way to jump the queue for routine work — during your own clinic's working hours you go to your own clinic, and a patient who turns up at the duty surgery is redirected or charged privately.

Dentures and the Compensation
Dental prosthetics are the second place the state pays for materials. Four groups qualify: people of retirement age, children under 18, insured people with a disability, and people treated for cancer of the mouth, face or jaw. Nobody else is in the scheme, at any income. The compensation is a ceiling on the fund's contribution, not a price: where the work costs less the fund pays what it costs, where it costs more the patient pays the remainder.

The queue is gone. Until 2021 this was Lithuania's most notorious waiting list — two to five years in most places, seven to ten in some. By January 2022 the fund reported none at all.
You file nothing, and a three-year clock starts the day you are registered
The dentist assesses eligibility and enters you in the fund's prosthetics register during the consultation; there is no application to write and no office to visit. Confirmation is given there and then, for any clinic holding a fund contract. From that registration you have 3 years to have the work done — let it lapse and the assessment starts again — and the same 3 years must pass before a further compensated prosthesis, except for under-18s and cancer patients whose circumstances change.
What Private Treatment Costs
There is no national average for private dentistry here, and a quoted one is invented: clinics publish their own lists, and the lists disagree by a factor of two on the same procedure. Below are two Vilnius clinics' own published prices, read across rather than blended. There is no local rate and no tourist rate — these are what anyone pays.

The healthcare guide carries a third list, Northway's — cheaper again at €30–€45 for a consultation and €80–€120 for a composite filling. The spread is the point. Ring the clinic you would actually use and ask what the quoted figure includes: an implant price excluding the abutment and the crown is a third of the real cost of replacing a tooth. Measure any offer against the compensation ceiling above — €670.39 covers a full acrylic denture at Dentiste's price — and against the private clinic networks, several of which hold PSDF contracts for the compensated part.

Will I find an English-speaking dentist?
More easily than in most other branches of Lithuanian medicine. Dentiste publishes its whole price list in English, and Northway tags each dentist's profile with the languages that dentist consults in. There is no official directory by language, so ask reception before you book rather than on the day. Where you want the state to pay, the fund contract narrows the field first and language second.
Is a Lithuanian dentist licensed and can I check?
Yes, and licensing moved. Since 1 January 2025 the Chamber of Dentists — Odontologų rūmai — issues and supervises the licences of dentists and oral care specialists, a function that previously sat with the state accreditation service. A practising dentist holds one and there is nothing improper in asking about it.
Can I claim Lithuanian dental treatment back from an insurer abroad?
A foreign insurer settles nothing directly with a Lithuanian private clinic, so the patient pays in full and claims at home under the cross-border healthcare rules, which repay planned treatment abroad up to what it would have cost their own system. It works outward too: pay the foreign clinic, then claim from your territorial fund within 12 months, at Lithuanian rates.
